Matthew
[Opening Cry] Prepare the way of the Lord. Make straight a road in the desert. Every valley shall be lifted; Every crooked path made true. Prepare the way of the Lord. Let repentance bear its fruit. The axe lies close beside the root; A greater One comes into view. [Verse 1] Camel's hair and leather girdle, Wild honey, locusts, Jordan sand. Jerusalem and all Judea Came confessing through the land. John refused the praise of titles, Named the pride beneath the skin: Do not claim that blood of Abraham Can replace a turning from sin. [Chorus] Prepare the way, The kingdom has drawn near. Prepare the way, Let every hidden motive clear. Water marks repentance, But One comes strong and bright, Baptizing with the Holy Ghost And purifying fire. [Verse 2] Soldiers asked and publicans asked, "What shall honest fruit become?" Take no more than what is ordered; Do no violence; be content. Priests inquired who John might be. He denied the Christ and name. A voice crying in the wilderness Was all the honor that he claimed. [Final Chorus] Prepare the way; The sandals he was not worthy to loose. The Lamb of God stood among them, And heaven would soon introduce.
