About the passage
Psalms 99: Holiness governs both the throne and the answer
Psalm 99 repeats one word through three movements: holy. The Lord reigns between the cherubim and above all peoples, and the opening response is trembling rather than the exuberant rejoicing of neighboring psalms. Yet holiness is not presented as raw distance. The King’s strength “loveth judgment,” establishes equity, and executes righteousness in Jacob. Worship at the footstool therefore acknowledges power whose moral direction has been named. The final movement brings Moses, Aaron, and Samuel into the poem as people who called on God and were answered. Their history shows nearness, instruction, forgiveness, and accountability together. God forgave and also took vengeance on wrongful practices. The third declaration of holiness gathers those realities rather than choosing between them. The psalm’s holy King is both approachable in prayer and unwilling to treat wrongdoing as inconsequential.
