[Verse 1] Boaz took Ruth into his household, and the LORD gave life within, After widowhood and wandering, Bethlehem received a son. Women gathered round Naomi, blessing God who had not left The empty house without a kinsman or the aging heart without hope. [Pre-Chorus] The hands once lifted only grief Now held a child against her breast. [Chorus] A son has been born, a life restored, The bitter road has opened into mercy. Obed will father Jesse, Jesse will father David, And faithful love will carry farther than they see. [Verse 2] Ruth was praised beyond seven sons for love that would not turn away, Naomi held the infant close and became nurse beside his mother. Neighbors gave the child a name and spoke of nourishment in age, What had seemed an ended household found a future in her arms. [Bridge] Perez led to Hezron, Hezron onward into Ram, Ram to Amminadab, then Nahshon, Salmon in the line. Salmon fathered Boaz, Boaz fathered Obed through Ruth, Obed fathered Jesse, and from Jesse David came. [Final Chorus] A son has been born, a life restored, The bitter road has opened into mercy. Obed will father Jesse, Jesse will father David, And faithful love will carry farther than they see. [Outro] The book that opened under famine Closed with harvest and a king.

About the passage

Ruth 4: Public redemption opens into a royal genealogy

The Book of Ruth finishes the redemption question in daylight, before witnesses, and then lets the result expand far beyond the city gate. Boaz gathers the nearer kinsman and ten elders, presents Naomi’s land interest, and makes clear that redemption also involves Ruth and the preservation of the dead man’s name and inheritance. The nearer man declines when the full obligation becomes clear, and the sandal exchange publicly confirms that Boaz may proceed. The witnesses bless Ruth and place her within the family memory of Israel. Boaz marries Ruth, the LORD gives conception, and Obed is born. The women who once heard Naomi call herself empty now speak of restored life and future care, and they praise Ruth as better to Naomi than seven sons. Then the Book of Ruth changes scale. A genealogy runs from Pharez to David, showing that ordinary loyalty, lawful redemption, harvest provision, and the inclusion of a Moabite woman have become part of Israel’s royal record.
