Leah

Unloved, and the mother of the line the promise ran down.

Leah is described in one clause, and the clause is a comparison with her sister. She is married to Jacob by her father’s trick and wakes up on the wrong side of a life she did not choose. The names she gives her sons are a record of what she is hoping for and not getting: God has seen my misery, God has heard I am unloved, now my husband will become attached to me. By the fourth she stops bargaining and says simply, this time I will praise the Lord. That son is Judah.

The story of Leah

  1. 01

    Genesis 29:16-25

    Morning, and it was Leah

Seven years of work, a wedding feast, a veil and a dark tent. The verse that reveals the swap is four words long and gives her no voice at all.

  2. 02

    Genesis 29:31-35

The names of the first four

Reuben, Simeon, Levi and Judah, and the explanations track a woman trying to buy affection with children until she stops and just gives thanks.

  3. 03

    Genesis 30:9-21

    The years of contending

The rivalry runs through servants, mandrakes and a bargain for one night. She bears two more sons and a daughter, Dinah.

  4. 04

    Genesis 49:29-32

    The grave she was given

Jacob’s last instruction names the cave where Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Rebekah and Leah are buried. He asks to be laid there too.

Why it matters

Leah is where Genesis quietly refuses its own preferences. The beloved wife gets the famous love story and two sons. The unloved one gets six, and the priesthood comes through Levi and the kings come through Judah, which means the line runs through the sister nobody chose. She is buried beside Jacob at Machpelah, and Rachel is not.
