Ecclesiastes

Ecclesiastes opens with “Everything Is Vapour” and carries its history toward “Remember Him Before the Silver Cord.” The Preacher says everything is vapour and goes looking for an exception. A dead fly spoils the perfumer’s ointment, and a little foolishness does the same to a reputation.

  1. 01

    Ecclesiastes 1–2

    Everything Is Vapour

The Preacher says everything is vapour and goes looking for an exception. He tries wisdom, laughter, wine, building projects, gardens, silver, singers, and finds that a man leaves all of it to someone who did not work for it and may be a fool.

    Ecclesiastes 3

    A Time to Every Purpose

A season for everything, and the list is even handed: born and dying, planting and plucking up, killing and healing, weeping and laughing, keeping silence and speaking. He has set the world in their heart, so no one can find out the whole of it.

    Ecclesiastes 4–6

Under the Sun, Nothing Is Fair

He looks at the tears of the oppressed and notices that nobody is comforting them. A man works alone with nobody to lift him when he falls, so two are better than one and a threefold cord is not quickly broken. Money never satisfies the man who loves it, and the labourer sleeps well whether he eats little or much while the rich man lies awake.

    Ecclesiastes 7–9

Better Things, and the Limits of Wisdom

A house of mourning teaches more than a house of feasting, because the living take it to heart. He goes looking for wisdom and finds it further off than he can reach, watches the same end come to the righteous and the wicked, and says the dead know nothing at all. Then, without withdrawing any of it: go eat your bread with joy, wear white, and enjoy the wife you love, because that is your portion.

    Ecclesiastes 10–12

Remember Him Before the Silver Cord

A dead fly spoils the perfumer’s ointment, and a little foolishness does the same to a reputation. Cast your bread on the waters, give a portion to seven and to eight, sow in the morning and in the evening, because you do not know which will come up. Then the long picture of old age as a house going quiet, and the end of the matter: fear God and keep his commandments.
