Proverbs

Proverbs opens with “Wisdom Shouts in the Street” and carries its history toward “Agur’s Questions and a Woman Worth Praising.” A father talks to a son, and the first warning is about friends who say come with us, let us lie in wait for blood. Agur says he is too stupid to know God, then lists what he does notice: ants who store food in summer, locusts with no king who march in rank, a lizard you can catch in your hand that lives in palaces.

    Proverbs 1–9

    Wisdom Shouts in the Street

A father talks to a son, and the first warning is about friends who say come with us, let us lie in wait for blood. Wisdom is not a private hobby here. She stands at the gates shouting, builds a house, kills her meat and sets a table, and calls the simple in. Across the road another woman calls from her own door with honey on her lips, and these chapters keep the two invitations side by side.

    Proverbs 10–15

    Solomon’s Sentences

The long poems stop and the one line proverbs begin, hundreds of them, each setting one thing against another. A wise son and a foolish one, a slack hand and a diligent one, a gentle answer and a harsh word, ordinary life sorted a sentence at a time.

    Proverbs 16–22

A Good Name Is Rather to Be Chosen

The sayings turn to weight and measure: a false balance is an abomination, a man plans his way but his steps are directed, pride goes before destruction. A good name is worth more than great riches, and loving favour more than silver and gold.

    Sayings of the Wise

A second collection, addressed to a son directly. Do not eat the bread of a man with a grudging eye, do not move the ancient landmark, do not envy sinners, and look hard at what wine does to a man who cannot leave it alone.

Agur’s Questions and a Woman Worth Praising

Agur says he is too stupid to know God, then lists what he does notice: ants who store food in summer, locusts with no king who march in rank, a lizard you can catch in your hand that lives in palaces. A mother tells her son not to give his strength to women or his judgement to wine, and to open his mouth for those who cannot speak. The book closes on a woman who buys a field, trades at a profit, works past midnight, and is praised at the gate.
