The big picture
The instructions for offerings now become public actions. God tells Moses, Israel's leader, to gather the people at the tabernacle, the tent used for worship. Aaron, the man appointed as chief priest, and his sons are brought forward with special clothes, oil, animals, and bread. Israel, the watching community, sees them washed, clothed, and set apart. Their new work begins through a ceremony God directs, not a claim they make for themselves.

The Priests Are Washed and Clothed

In everyday life
A newly appointed judge stands before the assembled court while an official brings the robe and reads the appointment. The public ceremony makes clear that she receives a recognised office rather than inventing one. Her duties begin under an authority outside herself. Aaron's appointment also requires sacred washing, oil, and sacrifice.

Leviticus 8:14-21
The First Animals Are Offered
The priestly family places their hands on the bull brought for the sin offering. Moses kills it and uses its blood to cleanse the altar, placing blood on the raised corners and at its base. The fat burns on the altar; the rest is burned outside the camp. A ram follows as a whole burnt offering. Moses handles its blood, washes its inner parts and legs, and burns it. The future priests begin as people who themselves need atonement.
In everyday life
A safety trainer checks the instructor's harness before allowing him to check the trainees' equipment. The instructor submits to the same necessary preparation that others will receive through his hands. His role does not remove his own need. Aaron's need involves atonement before God, not a harness inspection.

Leviticus 8:22-29
Blood Marks Ear Hand and Foot
A second ram is used to set the priests apart. Aaron and his sons lay hands on it before Moses kills it. He puts some blood on each man's right ear, right thumb, and right big toe. Other blood goes around the altar. Portions of fat, meat, and bread are placed in the priests' hands and presented before God, then burned. Moses receives the breast as his own assigned portion. The appointment involves their bodies and the work of their hands.
In everyday life
A rescue instructor fits a new crew member's radio, gloves, and boots before the first duty shift. She checks the points where he will hear directions, handle equipment, and move into danger. His whole working body needs preparation. The blood in this ceremony sets priests apart to God, not for rescue work.

Leviticus 8:30-36
Seven Days Complete the Appointment
Moses sprinkles oil and altar blood on Aaron, his sons, and their clothes. He tells them to cook and eat the appointed meat with the bread at the tent entrance. Any remainder must be burned. They must stay there for seven days, carrying out what God requires until their preparation is complete. Moses warns that disobedience would bring death. Aaron and his sons do all that God commands through him. The ceremony requires sustained obedience after its public beginning.
In everyday life
A trainee keeper remains beside the animal enclosure through a full supervised cycle before taking independent charge. Feeding, cleaning, and watching continue after the formal introduction. She cannot treat the first handover as the whole preparation. The priests' seven days are commanded by God and carry a warning of death.

Leviticus 8:35 The priests must remain day and night. Their appointment includes an extended period of keeping God's charge, rather than ending when the visible ceremony finishes.
