The big picture
The Levites, Israel's tribe assigned to the tabernacle, have been counted as families belonging to God. The tabernacle is his meeting tent among the people. Moses, their leader, and Aaron, their priest, now count the men who will carry it. Aaron's sons Eleazar and Ithamar help oversee the work. Preparing sacred objects for travel requires clear duties, since even those chosen to carry them must respect strict limits.

Priests Cover the Sacred Furniture
God orders a count of Kohath's men aged thirty to fifty for work at the tabernacle. Before they carry anything, Aaron and his sons must wrap the sacred furniture. They cover the ark with the inner curtain and further coverings. They also prepare the table, lampstand, altars and utensils with their specified cloths and skins. Only then do the carriers approach. Their task is to move these things without touching the holy objects themselves, since that contact would bring death.
In everyday life
A laboratory mover waits outside while specialists seal equipment that requires controlled handling. He checks the carrying bars only after they finish the preparation. Being trusted to transport the load does not give him permission to open it or touch its contents. Israel's carriers face a sacred prohibition, not a laboratory safety rule.

Numbers 4:16-20
Priests Must Protect the Carriers
Eleazar has charge of lamp oil, incense, the daily grain offering and the oil used to set things apart for God. He also oversees the whole tabernacle and its contents. God then warns Moses and Aaron not to let Kohath's families be destroyed. The priests must assign each man his task and load. The carriers must not enter to look at the sacred things as they are covered. Careful supervision is part of keeping these workers alive, not merely keeping the work tidy.
In everyday life
The demolition supervisor stops a crew at a marked line and assigns each worker a safe task. She checks that nobody enters while exposed cables are being secured. Her duty includes protecting the workers she has called to serve. The danger in Numbers comes from forbidden access to holy things, not damaged infrastructure.
Notice
Numbers 4:19 Aaron and his sons must assign the work so the carriers live. The warning places responsibility on the supervisors as well as on the workers.

Numbers 4:21-28
Gershon's Men Carry the Fabric
Gershon's working men from thirty to fifty years old must also be counted. Their load consists of the tabernacle's curtains, coverings, entrance hanging and courtyard hangings, along with cords and related equipment. Aaron and his sons direct their work and assign what they must carry. Ithamar, one of Aaron's sons, supervises them. These men do not choose whatever load happens to be near. Their family receives a defined part of the task of moving the tent where God meets his people.
In everyday life
A sailing instructor gives the sail crew labelled bundles of canvas and ropes before a boat is moved inland. Another crew handles the hull supports. The instructor checks each bundle with the crew leader so the sails arrive ready to use. Gershon's work supports worship, rather than the operation of a vessel.

Numbers 4:28 Ithamar is named as supervisor of Gershon's work. The instructions connect the family carrying the fabric to a particular priest who answers for the task.

Numbers 4:29-33
Merari's Men Carry the Structure
Merari's men are also counted from thirty to fifty years old. They carry the boards, crossbars, posts and bases that support the tabernacle. Their responsibility includes the courtyard posts, pegs, cords and other equipment. God requires the items to be assigned by name, so each load has a clear owner responsible for carrying it. Ithamar supervises this family too. The heavy structure and small fittings both belong to their work, since the tent needs all its parts when it is raised again.
In everyday life
The tent hire foreman hands each installer a checklist of poles, footplates and stakes before loading a truck. One worker checks small pegs while another secures the long supports. A missing fitting matters when the crew rebuilds the tent. Merari's load belongs to God's sanctuary, not a tent hired for an event.

Numbers 4:32 Even pegs and cords are assigned by name. The command makes small parts part of someone's clear responsibility, alongside the larger and heavier pieces.

Numbers 4:34-49
The Working Levites Are Counted
The three families present their eligible men to Moses, Aaron and the leaders for counting. Kohath's families provide 2,750, Gershon's provide 2,630, and Merari's provide 3,200. Together there are 8,580 men aged thirty to fifty. Each is counted for his service and his carrying work. The count follows the assignments already given by God, so the totals record workers with actual duties. This is a narrower count than the earlier list of all Levite males from one month old.
In everyday life
The bridge inspector reviews a staffing sheet that names trained workers beside the jobs they will perform. The final total includes only those eligible for the current inspection, not every employee in the company. She checks the assigned work as carefully as the head count. These Levites receive their duties through God's command.

Numbers 4:49 Each man is counted according to his work and load. The final total therefore concerns assigned service, rather than a number detached from the duties described.
