[Verse 1] Nathan tells David of a rich man who steals a poor man's single beloved lamb. Nathan declares, 'Thou art the man,' and recounts God's gifts to David. The sword and rebellion are announced as consequences within David's own house. The child will nevertheless die because the deed has caused enemies to blaspheme. [Pre-Chorus] The word was rare until the silence broke, Then truth stood upright in the words God spoke. [Chorus] Thou Art the Man, the word came like a flame, Kings could resist but could not silence the name. The prophet stood where fear had drawn the line, And heaven answered in appointed time. [Verse 2] David perceives their whispering and confirms the death. He rises, washes, worships in the house of the LORD. David explains that fasting could not restore the child after death. God loves Solomon and sends the name Jedidiah through Nathan. [Bridge] He summons David so the final victory will bear the king's name. David gathers the people and takes Rabbah. The Ammonite crown and great spoil pass to David. The conquered cities are subjected to labor, and David returns to Jerusalem. [Final Chorus] Thou Art the Man, the word came like a flame, Kings could resist but could not silence the name. The prophet stood where fear had drawn the line, And heaven answered in the final time. [Outro] The word went out and did not fall in vain. The prophet left the truth upon the plain.

About the passage

2 Samuel 12: The king hears his own case

Nathan arrives because the LORD sends him, and he begins with a small domestic case rather than an immediate accusation. A rich man with many animals takes the poor man's one beloved ewe lamb, and David pronounces judgment before Nathan says, "Thou art the man." The charge then names David's gifts, Uriah's death, Bathsheba, and the coming consequences inside David's own house. David confesses without a defense, and Nathan announces pardon while also saying the child will die. David fasts and pleads while the child lives, then rises, worships, and eats after the death because the possibility he was seeking has closed. Bathsheba is comforted, Solomon is born, and Nathan brings the name Jedidiah, joining the prophet of confrontation to a word of divine love. The chapter finally returns to Rabbah, where David receives the crown and spoil. Military triumph closes the campaign, but it cannot erase the confrontation that has already exposed what happened during the same war.
