[Verse 1]
Tribes came to Hebron and spoke with one voice:
"Bone of our bone, thou hast led us before."
Oil marked David as king over Israel;
Thirty years old, he would reign evermore.
Seven years Hebron, then thirty-three farther;
Covenant gathered the nation as one.
[Chorus]
Zion taken, stronghold broken,
City of David beneath morning sun.
Blind men and lame men were boasts of the fortress;
Up through the water shaft victory was won.
Zion taken, cedar rising,
Hiram sent timber to strengthen the throne.
David perceived that the Lord had established
Israel's kingdom, not glory his own.
[Verse 2]
Philistines heard and came spreading like water;
David inquired before moving his band.
At Baal-perazim the Lord broke before him
Like bursting waters that tear through the land.
Later they gathered; this time came instruction:
Circle behind by the mulberry trees.
When marching sounded above in the branches,
David moved swiftly and won by decree.
[Final Chorus]
Zion taken, promise moving,
Jerusalem chosen where worship would come.
Kingdom united, the city made ready,
David grew great by the Lord God of hosts.
