[Intro] Come sit by me. The fire's low. I'll tell you what I saw. [Verse 1] I was a girl at Horeb when the mountain burned with fire. A voice came out of the black cloud and the flame went climbing higher. He spoke ten words and said no more and wrote them into stone, and the old men ran to Moses, crying, you go near alone. [Pre-Chorus] We can't hear that voice and live. The fire will burn us through. You go and listen, Moses, then come tell us what to do. [Chorus] Hear, O Israel, hear it, child. He is the only One. Love Him with the heart you have, with breath and blood and bone. Hear, O Israel, say it low from the moon to the rising sun. [Verse 2] So I say it when you're waking and I say it when you lie, at the table and along the road when the traders pass us by. I tie it round your wrist with thread and pull the knot up tight, and when we've a house, I'll write it on the doorpost, left and right. [Chorus] Hear, O Israel, hear it, child. He is the only One. Love Him with the heart you have, with breath and blood and bone. Hear, O Israel, say it low from the moon to the rising sun. [Verse 3] There are houses over Jordan we never had to build, wells we never had to dig, and every storeroom filled. When you have eaten and are full, remember. Don't forget the brick kilns and the whip in Egypt. The hand that pulled us out of it is the hand that feeds you yet. [Bridge] And one day you'll ask me, child, what do these laws all mean? And I'll say, we were Pharaoh's slaves, and God came in between. He pulled us out by His own arm with signs before our eyes, to bring us here, to give us this, to keep us all alive. [Final Chorus] Hear, O Israel, hear it, child. He is the only One. Love Him with the heart you have, with breath and blood and bone. Hear, O Israel, say it low from the moon to the rising sun. Hear, O Israel. Hear it, child.

About the passage

Deuteronomy 5: Freedom receives its covenant shape

Moses brings Horeb into the present tense. The covenant spoken there is not treated as an antique agreement belonging only to people who have died; the living assembly must hear, learn, keep, and do it. The commandments begin with rescue from Egypt, then order worship, speech, Sabbath rest, family honor, life, marriage, property, testimony, and desire. Deuteronomy gives the Sabbath a social edge by insisting that servants rest as surely as masters do. After hearing God from the fire, Israel asks Moses to mediate further instruction. God approves the request, but his response exposes the deeper issue: saying the right thing in an overwhelming moment is not the same as having a heart that will keep obeying after everyone returns to ordinary life.

Deuteronomy 6: The words must live in the house

Chapter 6 moves the covenant from the mountain into the house. Love for the one LORD must involve heart, soul, and might, and the words are to be taught until they inhabit sitting, walking, lying down, rising, doorposts, and gates. Moses knows prosperity will create a new kind of test. Israel will enter cities it did not build, houses it did not fill, wells it did not dig, and vineyards it did not plant. Fullness can make the rescue from Egypt disappear from memory. Massah warns against demanding that God prove himself on Israel's terms, while a child's future question gives the household a better pattern: explain the commands by beginning with bondage, deliverance, and the purpose for which Israel was brought out and brought in.
