His Face Did Shine

Matthew 17:1-13

[Verse 1 - Quiet, ascending] Six days had passed when he led only three, Up from the road where the crowds could not be. Peter and James and John climbed the height, Then ordinary daylight surrendered to light. His face shone out like the sun in its strength, His clothing turned white like the heart of the light. And there in the glory stood Moses, Elijah, Speaking with Jesus before their own eyes. [Refrain - Luminous] His face did shine on the mountain above, Law and the prophets stood near to the Son. Not three equal shelters, not three equal names: The bright cloud answered whom they must obey. [Verse 2 - Building] Peter reached quickly for something to build, Three tabernacles before wonder was stilled. But while he was speaking, a cloud full of light Covered the summit and silenced the night. The Father’s own witness came out of the cloud: Beloved Son, pleasing; hear him now. The three hit the ground with their faces in fear, Till Jesus came close and told them to rise. [Bridge - Gentle, descending] They lifted their eyes; every figure was gone. No Moses, Elijah; only the Son. And down from the mountain the road turned again Toward death and a rising they could not yet frame. They asked about Elijah and what scribes had said; He pointed to suffering already fulfilled. [Final Refrain - Strong, clear] His face did shine on the mountain above, Law and the prophets bore witness to One. The cloud gave the order that still must remain: Hear the beloved Son. Hear what he says. [Outro - Low] Glory on the mountain. A cross still on the road.
