The Veil Was Torn

Matthew 27:27-56

[Opening - Low, brutal restraint] The governor’s hall became a theater of scorn. A crown was made from thorns. [Verse 1 - Dark, deliberate] Scarlet on shoulders, a reed in his hand, Soldiers bent laughing before their command. “Hail, King of the Jews,” while they spit and they struck, Then stripped off the costume and led him back out. Simon from Cyrene was pressed to the wood, Golgotha waited where skull-shaped ground stood. Bitter drink offered, then set to the side, The sentence was carried; the cross rose in sight. [Refrain - Heavy, controlled] The King had no army beneath him that day, Only mockers and thieves and a sign with his name. But when death took the hill and the daylight was gone, The earth gave an answer: the veil was torn. [Verse 2 - Moderate, grim] Garments were gambled; the watch settled in. “King of the Jews” stood written above him. Two thieves were lifted, one each at his side, Travelers mocked him while passing nearby. Priests joined the voices: he saved other men, Let him come down and we’ll trust him then. Hours of contempt hung over the hill, Then noon became darkness and daylight stood still. [Bridge - Sparse, desolate] The forsaken cry carried Psalm twenty-two. Some said Elijah was being called to. Vinegar lifted; the watchers stayed near, Waiting for rescue that would not appear. Then one final cry, and the breath was released. The hill held the cross; the voice had ceased. [Final Movement - Strong, seismic] From top down to bottom the temple veil tore, The earth shook beneath them, the rocks split apart. Graves broke open in the violence below, Signs reaching forward beyond what they knew. The centurion trembled with men at his side, Seeing the earthquake that followed the death. Roman lips said what the mockers denied: Truly this was the Son of God. [Outro - Low] Women watched from a distance. The torn veil moved in the dark.
