Hebrews

Hebrews opens with “God Hath Spoken unto Us by His Son” and carries its history toward “A Cloud of Witnesses.” No name at the top and no greeting, which is unusual, and it starts in the middle of an argument. Since we are surrounded by so many watching, lay aside the weight and run.

    Hebrews 1–4

God Hath Spoken unto Us by His Son

No name at the top and no greeting, which is unusual, and it starts in the middle of an argument. God used to speak through prophets in pieces; now he has spoken by a Son, who is better than the angels, and the proof is a chain of Old Testament quotations. Then the first warning: how shall we escape if we neglect so great salvation. Moses was faithful as a servant in the house, and Christ as a son over it.

  2. 02

    Hebrews 5–8

A Priest After the Order of Melchisedec

The argument is about qualification. A high priest is taken from among men and can have compassion on the ignorant because he is himself compassed with infirmity. Then a sharp aside: you ought to be teachers by now and you still need milk. Melchisedec turns up with no genealogy at all, and that is the point. This priesthood does not depend on descent and it does not end.

    Hebrews 9–10

    Once for All

The old tabernacle worked as a picture, and its own routine gave away the problem: the priest stood every day offering the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. This one sat down. Then the application that all of it was for: draw near with a true heart, hold fast, consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works, and do not forsake the assembling of yourselves together.

    Hebrews 11

    By Faith

A roll call of people who did not get what they were promised and kept going anyway. Some stopped the mouths of lions and some were sawn in two, and the chapter refuses to sort them into successes and failures.

    Hebrews 12–13

    A Cloud of Witnesses

Since we are surrounded by so many watching, lay aside the weight and run. Chastening is treated as the mark of a son rather than of rejection, and the letter ends in ordinary instructions: hospitality, prisoners, contentment, and a benediction.
