The big picture
Daniel, also called Belteshazzar, receives a revelation during the reign of Cyrus, king of Persia, the empire now in power. After three weeks of mourning and restricted food, he sees a dazzling figure by Hiddekel, a great river. His companions flee though they do not see the vision. Daniel loses strength and needs repeated help to stand and speak. The messenger describes conflict involving heavenly princes and comes to explain what awaits Daniel's people. A struggle was taking place while he waited. He could not see it.

Scripture beside the summary
Daniel · King James Version · 21Daniel 10:1-9
A Dazzling Figure Leaves Daniel Without Strength
The revelation comes after Daniel mourns for three weeks without rich food, meat, wine, or anointing oil. Beside the river, he sees a linen-clad man wearing gold. The figure's body shines like a gem, his face like lightning, eyes like flames, and limbs like polished bronze. His voice sounds like a crowd. Daniel's companions do not see him, yet tremble and flee. Left alone, Daniel loses strength and falls face down in a deep sleep as he hears the voice. The vision reaches him as an overwhelming encounter, not a calm exercise in solving symbols.

In everyday life
The mountain-guide trainee stands alone after companions retreat from a sudden overwhelming view of a damaged route. The report she must understand is important, yet her shaking body cannot take it in at once. She kneels until help reaches her. Daniel is overcome by a heavenly vision, not a reaction to physical terrain.
Notice
Daniel 10:7 Only Daniel sees the vision, though his companions feel terror. Their fear does not mean they share the revelation he is receiving or can explain it for him.
Daniel 10:1-9
King James Version1In the third year of Cyrus king of Persia a thing was revealed unto Daniel, whose name was called Belteshazzar; and the thing was true, but the time appointed was long: and he understood the thing, and had understanding of the vision.
2In those days I Daniel was mourning three full weeks.
3I ate no pleasant bread, neither came flesh nor wine in my mouth, neither did I anoint myself at all, till three whole weeks were fulfilled.
4And in the four and twentieth day of the first month, as I was by the side of the great river, which is Hiddekel;
5Then I lifted up mine eyes, and looked, and behold a certain man clothed in linen, whose loins were girded with fine gold of Uphaz:
6His body also was like the beryl, and his face as the appearance of lightning, and his eyes as lamps of fire, and his arms and his feet like in colour to polished brass, and the voice of his words like the voice of a multitude.
7And I Daniel alone saw the vision: for the men that were with me saw not the vision; but a great quaking fell upon them, so that they fled to hide themselves.
8Therefore I was left alone, and saw this great vision, and there remained no strength in me: for my comeliness was turned in me into corruption, and I retained no strength.
9Yet heard I the voice of his words: and when I heard the voice of his words, then was I in a deep sleep on my face, and my face toward the ground.
Daniel 10:10-14
The Prayer Was Heard Before the Delay
A hand raises Daniel onto his knees and hands. The messenger calls him greatly beloved and tells him to stand and listen. Daniel rises trembling. His words were heard from the first day he humbled himself to seek understanding. The messenger came because of those words but faced twenty-one days of resistance from the prince of Persia, pictured as a heavenly opponent linked to that kingdom. Michael, one of the chief heavenly princes, helped. The messenger now brings understanding of the later days. The delay is not explained as God ignoring the prayer.
In everyday life
A relief requester opens a message showing that her appeal was accepted on the first day, though obstacles delayed the help reaching her. The dates separate being heard from seeing an arrival. She reads the explanation before assuming the original plea was lost. Daniel's delay involves heavenly conflict, not the transport problems behind a modern aid delivery.
Notice
Daniel 10:12 Hearing is dated to the first day of Daniel's seeking. The later arrival must therefore be understood alongside an answer already set in motion.
Daniel 10:10-14
King James Version10And, behold, an hand touched me, which set me upon my knees and upon the palms of my hands.
11And he said unto me, O Daniel, a man greatly beloved, understand the words that I speak unto thee, and stand upright: for unto thee am I now sent. And when he had spoken this word unto me, I stood trembling.
12Then said he unto me, Fear not, Daniel: for from the first day that thou didst set thine heart to understand, and to chasten thyself before thy God, thy words were heard, and I am come for thy words.
13But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me one and twenty days: but, lo, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me; and I remained there with the kings of Persia.
14Now I am come to make thee understand what shall befall thy people in the latter days: for yet the vision is for many days.
Daniel 10:15-19
Touch and Words Restore Speech and Strength
Daniel looks down and cannot speak. A human-like figure touches his lips, enabling him to describe his pain and lack of strength. He asks how he can speak when even breath seems gone. Another touch strengthens him. He is again called beloved and told not to fear, with peace and renewed strength spoken over him. Daniel then asks the messenger to continue because he has been helped. The explanation waits for this restoration of his ability to hear. His weakness is met with care. It does not make him unfit to hear the message.

In everyday life
A speech therapist waits while a shaken patient finds enough breath to say that he cannot continue. Support and a pause come before the next instruction. When he says he is ready, she resumes slowly. Daniel receives strength through a heavenly touch and word, not a clinical technique or a course of therapy.
Notice
Daniel 10:19 Daniel's invitation to continue follows the strengthening word. Readiness is restored through help he receives, not through pretending the weakness has not affected him.
Daniel 10:15-19
King James Version15And when he had spoken such words unto me, I set my face toward the ground, and I became dumb.
16And, behold, one like the similitude of the sons of men touched my lips: then I opened my mouth, and spake, and said unto him that stood before me, O my lord, by the vision my sorrows are turned upon me, and I have retained no strength.
17For how can the servant of this my lord talk with this my lord? for as for me, straightway there remained no strength in me, neither is there breath left in me.
18Then there came again and touched me one like the appearance of a man, and he strengthened me,
19And said, O man greatly beloved, fear not: peace be unto thee, be strong, yea, be strong. And when he had spoken unto me, I was strengthened, and said, Let my lord speak; for thou hast strengthened me.
Daniel 10:20-21
The Messenger Returns to Conflict After Speaking
The messenger asks whether Daniel understands why he has come. He will return to fight the prince of Persia, and the prince of Grecia, the Greek power, will come afterwards. Before returning, he will disclose what is recorded in the writing of truth. Michael is named as Daniel's people's prince and the messenger's supporter in this struggle. The chapter ends with explanation about to continue. The glimpse is limited. It names helpers and foes. It gives Daniel no full map of the unseen world or command to direct its battles.
In everyday life
A liaison officer gives a brief explanation to a waiting family before returning to negotiations they cannot observe. She names who is helping and what information she can share, without pretending the family now knows every detail. The limited account still matters. Daniel hears of heavenly princes and a writing of truth, not confidential human negotiations.
Notice
Daniel 10:21 Michael is called the people's prince within the messenger's account of support. The unseen conflict is connected to their welfare, not introduced as a detached catalogue of heavenly beings.
Daniel 10:20-21
King James Version20Then said he, Knowest thou wherefore I come unto thee? and now will I return to fight with the prince of Persia: and when I am gone forth, lo, the prince of Grecia shall come.
21But I will shew thee that which is noted in the scripture of truth: and there is none that holdeth with me in these things, but Michael your prince.
