God Fills the Completed Tent

Exodus 40

The big picture

Every part of the sanctuary is ready. God tells Moses, Israel's leader, when to set up the tabernacle, the portable tent for meeting with him. Aaron, the priest, and his sons must also be prepared for service. Israel, the people camped around this worship place, will see more than the completion of a building. God's presence will fill the tent and guide the camp's movements.

In this chapter

Central truth

Moses prepares the sanctuary as commanded, and God's visible presence fills it and determines when Israel moves.

Scripture beside the summary

Exodus · King James Version · 38

Exodus 40:1-8

God Orders the Tent Arranged

The Lord tells Moses to set up the tent on the first day of the first month. He must place the sacred chest inside and screen it with the veil. The table, lamps, and incense altar each have an assigned place. Outside stand the altar for burnt offerings and the basin filled with water. The courtyard and its entrance screen surround them. God's instructions arrange the finished pieces into a working sanctuary, with boundaries and a clear order of approach.

Chapter sceneExodus 40

In everyday life

A laboratory lead positions the benches, storage cabinet, wash station, and entry screen according to the approved floor plan. She checks where each belongs before allowing work to begin. Finished equipment still needs careful placement. The sanctuary's arrangement governs approach to God, not safe laboratory practice.

Notice

Exodus 40:7 The basin stands between the altar and the tent. Washing is built into the route of service, rather than left as an unrelated task elsewhere.

Exodus 40:1-8

King James Version

1And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

2On the first day of the first month shalt thou set up the tabernacle of the tent of the congregation.

3And thou shalt put therein the ark of the testimony, and cover the ark with the vail.

4And thou shalt bring in the table, and set in order the things that are to be set in order upon it; and thou shalt bring in the candlestick, and light the lamps thereof.

5And thou shalt set the altar of gold for the incense before the ark of the testimony, and put the hanging of the door to the tabernacle.

6And thou shalt set the altar of the burnt offering before the door of the tabernacle of the tent of the congregation.

7And thou shalt set the laver between the tent of the congregation and the altar, and shalt put water therein.

8And thou shalt set up the court round about, and hang up the hanging at the court gate.

Exodus 40:9-16

Oil and Washing Prepare the Priests

Moses must apply the special oil to the tent and its equipment, setting them apart as holy, or belonging to God. The altar and washing basin receive the same treatment. Aaron and his sons are brought to the entrance and washed. They receive their priestly clothes and are anointed with oil. Their family will continue this service through later generations. Moses does what God commands, preparing both the place of worship and the people who will serve there.

Exodus 40:9-16: Oil and Washing Prepare the Priests
Chapter sceneExodus 40

In everyday life

A lifeboat trainer hands new crew members their fitted gear after checking the rescue boat. She walks them through the formal handover before their first watch. Ready equipment and appointed workers belong together. Anointing sets Aaron's family apart for God rather than certifying a rescue qualification.

Notice

Exodus 40:15 The sons are anointed as their father is. Their service is presented as a continuing family responsibility, not an appointment that ends with one generation.

Exodus 40:9-16

King James Version

9And thou shalt take the anointing oil, and anoint the tabernacle, and all that is therein, and shalt hallow it, and all the vessels thereof: and it shall be holy.

10And thou shalt anoint the altar of the burnt offering, and all his vessels, and sanctify the altar: and it shall be an altar most holy.

11And thou shalt anoint the laver and his foot, and sanctify it.

12And thou shalt bring Aaron and his sons unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, and wash them with water.

13And thou shalt put upon Aaron the holy garments, and anoint him, and sanctify him; that he may minister unto me in the priest’s office.

14And thou shalt bring his sons, and clothe them with coats:

15And thou shalt anoint them, as thou didst anoint their father, that they may minister unto me in the priest’s office: for their anointing shall surely be an everlasting priesthood throughout their generations.

16Thus did Moses: according to all that the LORD commanded him, so did he.

Exodus 40:17-21

Moses Sets the Chest Behind the Veil

On the appointed date in the second year, Moses raises the tabernacle. He puts the bases, boards, bars, and pillars in place, then spreads the tent coverings over them. He places the testimony, the written terms of God's agreement, inside the ark. Carrying poles and the gold cover are fitted to it. Moses brings the chest into the tent and hangs the veil in front of it. The structure now protects and separates the place where the agreement is kept.

Exodus 40:17-21: Moses Sets the Chest Behind the Veil
Chapter sceneExodus 40

In everyday life

An archivist installs the original signed deed in a secure cabinet after the new records room is finished. She checks the supports, fits the cabinet door, and closes the inner screen. The central document receives its appointed place. God's written agreement is held in a sacred chest, not an archive cabinet.

Notice

Exodus 40:20 The testimony goes inside the ark before the cover is put on. The chest's importance is tied to the words of God's agreement it holds.

Exodus 40:17-21

King James Version

17And it came to pass in the first month in the second year, on the first day of the month, that the tabernacle was reared up.

18And Moses reared up the tabernacle, and fastened his sockets, and set up the boards thereof, and put in the bars thereof, and reared up his pillars.

19And he spread abroad the tent over the tabernacle, and put the covering of the tent above upon it; as the LORD commanded Moses.

20And he took and put the testimony into the ark, and set the staves on the ark, and put the mercy seat above upon the ark:

21And he brought the ark into the tabernacle, and set up the vail of the covering, and covered the ark of the testimony; as the LORD commanded Moses.

Exodus 40:22-33

The Furnishings Enter Active Service

Moses places the table on one side and the lampstand opposite it. He arranges the bread and lights the lamps. Incense burns on the gold altar, while offerings are made on the altar outside. Water fills the basin, where Moses, Aaron, and Aaron's sons wash their hands and feet before serving. Moses then raises the courtyard and hangs its entrance screen. The work ends with objects being used as God directed, not merely displayed in their proper places.

The tabernacle

In everyday life

A cafe owner switches on the lights, fills the sink, and sets bread on the counter before opening day. Her staff checks the handwashing station as they prepare to serve. The fitted room becomes a place of active work. These sanctuary actions are worship commanded by God, not preparations for customers.

Notice

Exodus 40:32 Washing happens whenever the priests approach the tent or altar. A one-time preparation does not replace the repeated washing required during their service.

Exodus 40:22-33

King James Version

22And he put the table in the tent of the congregation, upon the side of the tabernacle northward, without the vail.

23And he set the bread in order upon it before the LORD; as the LORD had commanded Moses.

24And he put the candlestick in the tent of the congregation, over against the table, on the side of the tabernacle southward.

25And he lighted the lamps before the LORD; as the LORD commanded Moses.

26And he put the golden altar in the tent of the congregation before the vail:

27And he burnt sweet incense thereon; as the LORD commanded Moses.

28And he set up the hanging at the door of the tabernacle.

29And he put the altar of burnt offering by the door of the tabernacle of the tent of the congregation, and offered upon it the burnt offering and the meat offering; as the LORD commanded Moses.

30And he set the laver between the tent of the congregation and the altar, and put water there, to wash withal.

31And Moses and Aaron and his sons washed their hands and their feet thereat:

32When they went into the tent of the congregation, and when they came near unto the altar, they washed; as the LORD commanded Moses.

33And he reared up the court round about the tabernacle and the altar, and set up the hanging of the court gate. So Moses finished the work.

Exodus 40:34-35

Moses Cannot Enter the Tent

God's glory fills the new holy place. A cloud rests over its roof. This visible sign of God's presence is so overwhelming that Moses cannot enter. He has followed every instruction and completed the work, yet the finished sanctuary remains God's place. Its maker and organiser cannot walk in at will. The account moves from human hands arranging materials to God filling the space. Completion receives an answer that no craftsman, priest, or leader can manufacture.

Exodus 40:34-35: Moses Cannot Enter the Tent
Chapter sceneExodus 40

In everyday life

A concert technician finishes testing a great organ and steps back when the first full chord fills the hall. The sound now dominates the space he has spent weeks preparing. His work has made room for something larger than his own activity. God's presence is personal and divine, not sound from equipment.

Notice

Exodus 40:35 Even Moses cannot enter while the cloud rests there. His unique role in preparing the tent does not give him unrestricted access to God's presence.

Exodus 40:34-35

King James Version

34Then a cloud covered the tent of the congregation, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle.

35And Moses was not able to enter into the tent of the congregation, because the cloud abode thereon, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle.

Exodus 40:36-38

The Cloud Guides Every Departure

The cloud also governs when the people travel. Whenever it rises from the tabernacle, Israel sets out. When it remains, the people stay where they are until it lifts. By day the cloud rests over the tent, and by night fire is visible there. The whole community can see this sign throughout its travels. The sanctuary is not a fixed destination left behind; God's visible presence remains with the camp and directs both movement and waiting.

Exodus 40:36-38: The Cloud Guides Every Departure
Chapter sceneExodus 40

In everyday life

A ferry captain holds the vessel at its berth while the harbour light stays red. Passengers wait aboard until the clear signal appears, and then the crew casts off. Departure follows guidance the captain does not control. Israel follows God's presence itself, while the captain follows a human traffic system.

Notice

Exodus 40:37 Waiting lasts until the cloud lifts, without a timetable supplied here. The people must follow God's visible guidance for staying as well as for leaving.

Exodus 40:36-38

King James Version

36And when the cloud was taken up from over the tabernacle, the children of Israel went onward in all their journeys:

37But if the cloud were not taken up, then they journeyed not till the day that it was taken up.

38For the cloud of the LORD was upon the tabernacle by day, and fire was on it by night, in the sight of all the house of Israel, throughout all their journeys.
