The big picture
Ezekiel is a priest living among captives by the river Chebar in the Chaldeans' land, the territory of Babylon. The vision comes in the fifth year of King Jehoiachin's captivity. Far from the homeland, he sees the heavens opened and experiences God's hand upon him. A storm, living creatures, wheels, and a shining expanse lead his gaze towards a throne. He describes likenesses rather than giving a familiar portrait. The sight of the Lord's glory leaves him face down, ready to hear a voice.

The Heavens Open Beside the Exiles River
The account opens with dates and a location among captives. Ezekiel sees visions of God by the river Chebar. The fifth day of the fourth month is also placed in the fifth year of the exiled king's captivity. He is identified as a priest, son of Buzi. God's word comes directly to him there, and the Lord's hand rests upon him. Exile has not put the place outside divine speech. The unusual vision begins within the recorded time and setting of a displaced man's life, rather than in the homeland's temple.
In everyday life
An exiled musician opens a letter appointing her to important work while sitting beside the canal near her temporary lodging. The setting feels far from the place where she expected her calling to develop. She reads it carefully there. Ezekiel receives God's word and vision directly, not a human appointment arriving by post.

Ezekiel 1:3 The repeated emphasis on the place includes the Lord's hand being there. Distance from the homeland does not prevent Ezekiel from receiving the divine word among captives.

Living Creatures Move Within the Fire
A storm cloud approaches from the north, bright with folding fire and a glowing centre. Four living creatures emerge with a human-like form. Each has four faces and four wings, straight legs, shining feet like calves' feet, and human hands beneath the wings. Their faces resemble a human, lion, ox, and eagle. Two wings join and two cover the body. They move straight where the spirit directs without turning. Fire travels among them, and lightning flashes as they dart back and forth. Ezekiel describes what the vision resembles without reducing it to ordinary animals.
In everyday life
A wildlife illustrator watches several forms overlap in a reflected window and struggles to describe the changing view without pretending it is one familiar creature. She notes separate features instead of forcing an early label. The comparison concerns the difficulty of description only. Ezekiel sees living beings in a divine vision, not an optical reflection.

The Wheels Share the Creatures Movement
Beside the creatures, Ezekiel sees wheels on the ground. All four look alike, with the appearance of one wheel within another. They can move in any of four directions without turning. Their rims rise so high that they inspire dread and are covered with eyes. Whenever the creatures move, stand, or rise from the earth, the wheels do the same. The spirit of the living creature is in them. Wheels and creatures move as one. The wheels do not trail behind by chance. They share the life that moves the creatures.
In everyday life
A stage engineer tests a platform that moves in several directions as its guiding performer steps, stops, and rises. She checks that every part responds together rather than lagging behind. The unity of motion is visible. Ezekiel's wheels share the creatures' spirit and bear eyes; they are not a human machine operated by a performer.
Notice
Ezekiel 1:20 The same spirit is said to be in the wheels. That statement explains their shared motion without treating them as independent sources of direction.

A Voice Comes from Above the Wings
Above the creatures' heads stretches an expanse like awe-inspiring crystal. Beneath it, their wings extend towards one another while other wings cover their bodies. Ezekiel hears their motion as the noise of great waters, an army, and the voice of the Almighty. When the creatures stop, they lower their wings. A voice then comes from above the expanse. The vision draws attention higher, from the creatures' motion and tremendous sound towards the one who speaks over them. Even these imposing beings are not the highest point of what Ezekiel sees and hears.
In everyday life
An orchestral listener hears a full ensemble stop and lower its instruments as a solo voice begins from a high gallery. The change directs attention above the sound that first filled the hall. She turns to listen. Ezekiel hears a voice over heavenly creatures beneath a crystal-like expanse, not a planned musical performance.

Ezekiel 1:25 The voice is heard when the creatures stand and lower their wings. Their great sound gives way to speech from above them, directing attention past their own splendour.

Glory Around the Throne Brings Him Low
Above the expanse appears something like a sapphire throne. Upon it is a likeness with a human appearance. Ezekiel sees glowing brightness and fire above and below the waist, surrounded by radiance like a rainbow in rain clouds. He identifies this as the appearance of the likeness of the Lord's glory. He names what he sees with care. He does not claim to give a complete account of God. He falls on his face. Then he hears someone speaking, so the overwhelming sight leads into an encounter in which he must listen.
In everyday life
An astronomer watches an unfamiliar luminous display through an instrument. She describes its appearance carefully instead of claiming to know all that she sees. The scale of it makes her pause before speaking. Ezekiel identifies divine glory and falls before a speaking presence; scientific caution does not reproduce that encounter.

Ezekiel 1:28 Ezekiel calls it the appearance of a likeness of God's glory. He describes what he sees. He does not claim that a familiar form can contain God.
