[Verse 1]
Men came down from Judea
Teaching Gentiles must become
Circumcised beneath the custom
Before salvation could be won.
Paul and Barnabas disputed;
The church sent them to the seat
Where apostles and the elders
Would discern what grace complete.
[Refrain]
Why place a yoke upon the neck
That neither fathers nor sons could bear?
Through the grace of the Lord comes rescue,
Jew and Gentile equal there.
Why place a yoke upon the neck?
Faith has purified the heart.
God gave Spirit without distinction;
Do not rebuild the wall torn apart.
[Verse 2]
Peter spoke of Cornelius.
Barnabas and Paul declared
Signs and wonders among nations,
Evidence the Lord had shared.
James recalled the prophets' promise:
David's fallen tent restored,
Gentiles seeking Israel's God
And called beneath the holy Lord.
[Chorus]
No greater burden
Than the needful things for peace:
Turn from idols and from blood,
From fornication, and increase
In fellowship across the tables.
Letters carried joy abroad.
No greater burden
Than the wisdom shaped by God.
[Final Verse]
Judas and Silas bore the message;
Antioch rejoiced at consolation.
The gospel remained grace,
And unity survived deliberation.
