Stephen's Martyrdom
Acts · Oratorio-inspired cinematic
[Table and Testimony]
Seven were chosen where widows had need,
And Stephen served with a faithful deed.
Grace on his face, wisdom in speech,
No purchased honor, no throne to reach.
[Verse I]
False words gathered and witnesses came,
Yet heaven had marked him before they named blame.
He opened the story from Abraham's road,
Through Joseph and Moses and Sinai's load.
[Refrain]
Ye do always resist the Holy Ghost,
Building the tomb while rejecting the voice.
The law was received, but the heart turned away,
And truth stood accused in the council that day.
[Movement II]
The fathers refused whom the LORD had sent,
The calf took the worship that covenant meant.
The tabernacle traveled, the temple was raised,
But the Highest is not held by houses men made.
[Chorus]
Behold, the heavens opened wide,
The Son of man standing at God's right side.
Stones may fall and the witness bleed,
But mercy still speaks for the ones in need.
Behold, the heavens opened wide,
Receive his spirit when the faithful die.
[Final Prayer]
Lay not this sin to their charge, he cried,
Then sleep took the servant the stones could not hide.
[Coda]
A young man watched the garments,
And the witness moved on.
