Truly This Man Was the Son of God
Mark · Modern Classical
[Verse 1 - the road]
They compelled Simon a Cyrenian
To bear the cross behind him.
They brought Jesus unto Golgotha,
And at the third hour they crucified him.
[Refrain - between two thieves]
The superscription read, THE KING OF THE JEWS.
One thief was set on his right and one on his left.
They parted his garments and cast lots;
The passersby wagged their heads.
[Verse 2 - the mockery]
He saved others; himself he cannot save.
Let Christ the King descend now from the cross.
Even they that were crucified with him reviled him,
And darkness covered the land from the sixth hour.
[Bridge - the ninth hour]
Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?
My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?
Jesus cried with a loud voice,
And gave up the ghost.
[Chorus - the veil]
The veil of the temple was rent in twain,
From the top to the bottom.
The centurion standing over against him said,
Truly this man was the Son of God.
[Outro - the stone]
Women looked on afar; Joseph asked Pilate for the body.
He wrapped him in linen and laid him in a sepulchre hewn out of a rock.
