Matthew, Part One

Matthew

[Opening] Matthew declares the promised King, The Son of David has come. [Verse 1] From AY-bruh-ham through David’s throne, The promised line moves toward the Son. An angel steadies Joseph’s heart, In BETH-li-hem the child is born. The MAY-jye kneel, while HAIR-ud schemes, Through Egypt’s night the child is kept. Then NAZ-uh-reth becomes His home, While John calls Israel to repent. The heavens open at the Jordan, The Spirit settles like a dove. The desert tempter leaves defeated, Four fishermen arise and follow. [Pre-Chorus] From wilderness to GAL-uh-lee, The ancient promise walks among them. [Chorus] Behold the King, let heaven resound, The blind now see, the lost are found. The wind bows low, the waves lie still, The broken rise beneath His will. Lift up your eyes, the promise fulfilled: The Son of the living God revealed. [Verse 2] The poor receive the kingdom’s promise, The mourning hear that comfort comes. Prayer and mercy, trust and treasure, Enemies are answered with love. Rain and flood strike rock and sand, One house stands, the other falls. The leper’s flesh is cleansed before Him, The distant servant rises healed. The fever leaves, the crowds draw near, The drowning vessel fights the storm. He speaks, and raging waters settle, While frightened men behold His power. [Pre-Chorus] No sickness, darkness, wind, or wave Can stand before the promised King. [Chorus] Behold the King, let heaven resound, The blind now see, the lost are found. The wind bows low, the waves lie still, The broken rise beneath His will. Lift up your eyes, the promise fulfilled: The Son of the living God revealed. [Verse 3] Two tormented men come from the tombs, The swine rush headlong to the sea. The paralyzed man lifts his bed, And Matthew leaves the customs seat. A trembling woman finds the hem, A ruler’s daughter breathes again. Two blind men see, the mute man speaks, The Twelve are sent through field and town. John’s messengers return with proof, The weary hear the call to rest. On Sabbath, withered fingers open, While hardened rulers plan His fall. [Verse 4] The sign of Jonah answers pride, The sower casts on varied ground. The kingdom grows through seed and harvest, The hidden treasure waits to be found. Yet NAZ-uh-reth rejects the prophet, And John falls beneath the blade. Five thousand eat beside the water, While twelve full baskets are retrieved. Peter sinks beneath the waves, And Jesus draws him from the deep. A KAY-nuh-night receives her mercy, Four thousand eat and rise renewed. [Bridge] “Whom do men say that I am?” The question hangs before them all. At sez-uh-REE-uh fih-LIP-eye, Peter answers without fear: [Final Chorus] Behold the King, let heaven resound, The blind now see, the lost are found. The wind bows low, the waves lie still, The broken rise beneath His will. Lift up your eyes, the promise fulfilled: The Son of the living God revealed. [Final Chorus Extension] The promised Christ, the living Son, The kingdom’s work has now begun. Through mercy, truth, and power displayed, The Son of God stands unafraid. [Outro] “Thou art the Christ, The Son of the living God.” The King revealed.
