[Verse 1 - at Capernaum] My servant lies at home sick of the palsy, Grievously tormented, unable to rise. Jesus said, I will come and heal him; The centurion answered before the door. [Refrain] Lord, I am not worthy That thou shouldest come under my roof. Speak the word only, And my servant shall be healed. [Verse 2 - under authority] I am a man under authority, And soldiers are placed beneath my command. I say to this man, Go, and he goeth; I say to another, Come, and he cometh. [Interlude] [Bridge - faith from afar] Jesus marvelled and turned to those who followed: I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel. Many shall sit with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob In the kingdom of heaven. [Outro - the same hour] Go thy way; as thou hast believed, so be it done. His servant was healed in the selfsame hour.

About the passage

Matthew 8: Authority reaches the places people cannot

The authority displayed in teaching now reaches leprosy, paralysis, fever, distance, weather, and demons. Jesus touches a man before announcing him clean, speaks a word a centurion trusts without demanding physical proximity, and restores Peter’s mother-in-law inside an ordinary household before many more are healed that evening. Between these acts, Matthew places demanding exchanges about following, stripping enthusiasm of guarantees about comfort or delay. The disciples then follow Jesus into a boat and discover that following does not prevent a storm. His command produces a great calm and a question about his identity. Across the water, demons answer that question with the title “Son of God,” but their recognition is not allegiance, and the nearby town responds to his authority by asking him to leave.
