Lyrics · Numbers
We Were as Grasshoppers
Numbers 13:1-14:45
[Verse 1]
Twelve rulers crossed the valleys, searched the cities and the land,
Forty days from south to north with fruit within their hands.
Eshcol's cluster bent the staff between the shoulders of two men,
And all agreed the land was good before the fear began.
[Pre-Chorus]
Walls rose high, the sons of Anak stood,
Then ten voices made the promise look too small.
[Chorus]
We were as grasshoppers in our own sight,
So fear made giants larger than the God who led by night.
The land was good, the word was sure,
But unbelief turned forty days to forty years.
[Verse 2]
Caleb stilled the people, Joshua tore his clothes,
They said the LORD would bring them in if rebellion did not grow.
But stones were raised against them till the glory filled the tent,
And Moses stood between the people and immediate judgment.
[Bridge]
The ten who spread the terror fell beneath the plague,
The generation wandered till the wilderness held their graves.
Then grief armed itself for battle after God had said not to go,
And Amalek and Canaan chased them down to Hormah.
[Final Chorus]
We were as grasshoppers in our own sight,
So fear made giants larger than the God who led by night.
The fruit was real, the land was near,
But unbelief turned forty days to forty years.
[Outro]
The children they feared losing,
Would enter where the fathers would not.
