Seth

The son given in place of the one who was killed, and the line the rest of the Bible runs through.

Seth is born after Abel's death, and his mother names him for exactly that: someone appointed in place of the son she lost. The account does not record a single thing he said. What it records instead is that in his time people began to call on the name of the Lord, and that his line, not Cain's, carries the genealogy forward to Noah and from there to Abraham.

The story of Seth

  1. 01

    Genesis 4:25

    Appointed in his place

A third son after a murder. The name itself is a statement that the story is not over.

  2. 02

    Genesis 4:26

    Calling on the name

In his generation people begin to call on the name of the Lord. It is a quiet line, and it marks a turn.

  3. 03

    Genesis 5:3-8

    The line that continues

The genealogy of Genesis 5 runs through him, and it is the road to Noah and to everything after the flood.

Why it matters

Seth is what continuation looks like. Genesis has just shown a family destroy itself, and the answer it gives is not a hero but a birth and a list of names. Every promise made later in Scripture travels down the line that starts here.
