Philippians

Philippians opens with “To Live Is Christ” and carries its history toward “I Have Learned to Be Content.” Written from prison, and it is the happiest letter he wrote. Two women are named and asked to be of the same mind, which is the only time he does that in a letter.

    Philippians 1

    To Live Is Christ

Written from prison, and it is the happiest letter he wrote. He tells them the chains have actually advanced the gospel, that the whole palace guard now knows why he is there, and that some people are preaching Christ out of spite to make his imprisonment harder, and he does not mind, because Christ is preached either way. For me to live is Christ, and to die is gain, and he honestly cannot decide which he would rather.

    Philippians 2

    He Humbled Himself

Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem the other better than himself. Then the hymn: being in the form of God he made himself of no reputation, took the form of a servant, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him. Then Timothy, who cares without being asked, and Epaphroditus, who nearly died getting there.

    Philippians 3

I Count All Things but Loss

He lists his credentials in full, circumcised the eighth day, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Pharisee, blameless as touching the law, and then says he counts all of it as refuse. This one thing I do: forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forth unto those things which are before. Our conversation is in heaven, from whence also we look for the Saviour.

I Have Learned to Be Content

Two women are named and asked to be of the same mind, which is the only time he does that in a letter. Rejoice, be careful for nothing, and the peace of God which passeth all understanding shall keep your hearts. Think on whatever is true, honest, just, pure, lovely. Then the thank you note that is the actual reason for the letter, and the line he has earned the right to write: I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.
