[Verse 1] Solomon loves many foreign women from nations Israel was warned against. In old age Solomon's heart is no longer perfect toward the LORD. High places are built for Chemosh and Molech near Jerusalem. The kingdom is sentenced to be torn away after Solomon's lifetime. [Pre-Chorus] The warning stood where no one wished to see, And every hidden root became a tree. [Chorus] His Heart Was Turned Away, let the warning remain, Hidden sin still flowers into pain. The word of the LORD exposed what men concealed, And judgment stood where every heart was revealed. [Verse 2] Pharaoh receives Hadad favorably and gives him a royal marriage. Hadad later asks to return to Edom after David and Joab die. Rezon becomes another adversary and reigns in Damascus. Ahijah meets Jeroboam alone wearing a new garment. [Bridge] Ten pieces signify the tribes to be given Jeroboam because of Solomon's idolatry. Jeroboam receives a conditional promise of an enduring house if he obeys. Solomon seeks to kill Jeroboam, who flees to Egypt. After forty years Solomon dies, and Rehoboam reigns in his place. [Final Chorus] His Heart Was Turned Away, let the warning remain, Hidden sin still flowers into pain. The word of the LORD exposed what men concealed, And judgment stood where every heart stood revealed. [Outro] The warning did not vanish with the dust. The final line remembered judgment, fear, and trust.

About the passage

1 Kings 11: The heart turns, and the kingdom begins to tear

The chapter turns Solomon’s greatest strength, his heart, into the site of his decisive failure. His many marriages lead him after other gods, and the king who built the temple also builds high places for rival worship near Jerusalem. Because the LORD had appeared to Solomon twice and explicitly warned him, the resulting judgment is presented as conscious covenant disobedience rather than ignorance. Most of the kingdom will be torn away after his death, though David’s line and Jerusalem remain protected by earlier promises. The rest of the chapter shows that fracture entering history from several directions. Hadad and Rezon carry unresolved consequences from David’s wars into Solomon’s later years, while Jeroboam rises from within Solomon’s own labor administration. Ahijah’s torn garment gives the coming division a visible sign and offers Jeroboam a conditional promise of an enduring house if he obeys. Solomon instead seeks Jeroboam’s death, driving him into Egyptian refuge. The forty-year reign closes without repairing the announced breach, leaving Rehoboam to inherit a kingdom whose splendor remains intact on the surface and whose unity has already been sentenced.
