Lyrics · Exodus
Bread from Heaven, Water from Stone
Exodus 15:22-17:16
[Verse 1]
Three days into wilderness, no water met the road,
Marah tasted bitter till a tree made sweetness flow.
At Elim twelve wells waited under seventy palms,
Then hunger made the people praise the slavery they had known.
[Pre-Chorus]
Morning laid a fine white covering,
Evening brought the quail across the camp.
[Chorus]
Bread from heaven, water from stone,
Daily mercy for a people learning they were not alone.
Gather what is given, rest when Sabbath comes,
The wilderness may test them, but the LORD will lead them on.
[Verse 2]
Manna could not be hoarded, worms exposed the grasping hand,
Yet a double portion kept through rest exactly as commanded.
At Rephidim thirst returned and anger rose against the guide,
Then Moses struck the rock at Horeb and a river answered dry land.
[Bridge]
Amalek came fighting while Joshua took the plain,
Moses held the rod above them, Israel prevailed.
When his hands grew heavy, Aaron and Hur became the stay,
And Jehovah-nissi marked the LORD who fought that day.
[Final Chorus]
Bread from heaven, water from stone,
Daily mercy for a people learning they were not alone.
Hands held high till sunset, victory when daylight was gone,
The wilderness kept testing, but the LORD kept leading on.
[Outro]
Manna in the morning,
And a banner on the hill.
