Matthew
[Verse 1] Caesar called the world to number; Joseph traveled to his town. Mary bore her firstborn Son Where no guest room could be found. Cloth around Him, manger beneath Him, Bethlehem under midnight sky; Fields held shepherds through the darkness When the glory gathered nigh. [Angelic Chorus] Glory in the highest, Peace on earth, goodwill to men. Unto you is born a Saviour In the city of David. Glory in the highest, Heaven's praise through night unfurled; A child lies wrapped within a manger, Christ the Lord has entered the world. [Verse 2] Shepherds ran and found the sign, Then spread the saying through the street. Mary kept the words and pondered; Heaven met earth where cattle eat. Simeon took Him in the temple, Saw salvation in his hands. Anna spoke to all who waited For redemption in the land. [Verse 3] Wise men followed from the east, Brought gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Herod heard and sharpened murder; A dream warned Joseph to depart. Egypt sheltered the young child Till the tyrant's breath was done. Nazareth received the family; Prophecy surrounded the Son. [Final Chorus] Glory in the highest, Not in palace, sword, or pride. Heaven's King lay small and guarded At a faithful mother's side.

About the passage

Matthew 1: A royal line with its wounds still showing

Matthew opens with a royal genealogy that does not hide its damaged places. David is named as king, Babylon marks the collapse of visible kingship, and several women interrupt the expected father-to-son rhythm before the repeated formula changes at Joseph. He is Mary’s husband, not the biological father Matthew is preparing to exclude. The chapter then narrows from generations to one man’s decision. Joseph plans a quiet separation on the information available to him, receives a different explanation in a dream, and acts on it. Jesus and Emmanuel do different work in the closing verses: one is the commanded name, the other Matthew’s explanation of the birth as “God with us.”

Matthew 2: A king sought, a child hunted

Foreign visitors arrive asking for the king of the Jews while Herod already occupies the throne, and that collision drives the chapter. The religious specialists know Bethlehem from Scripture, the visitors intend worship, and Herod turns correct information into a concealed search for a rival. The child is found in a house, honored with gifts, and protected when the visitors leave by another route. Joseph then carries Jesus into Egypt while Bethlehem bears the cost of Herod’s violence. Return becomes possible only after Herod’s death, and even then Archelaus makes Judaea unsafe. Matthew keeps fulfillment beside danger throughout, ending with Nazareth and a prophetic connection whose exact Old Testament route remains debated.
