Lyrics · 2 Chronicles
Wisdom for the Great Work
2 Chronicles 1:1-2:18
[Verse 1]
Solomon is strengthened in his kingdom, and God magnifies him.
The assembly goes to Gibeon, where Moses' tabernacle remains.
Solomon offers one thousand burnt offerings upon it.
Solomon remembers mercy shown to David and his own new kingship.
[Pre-Chorus]
The speeches rose, each certain of its claim,
But certainty alone could not explain.
[Chorus]
Wisdom for the Great Work, let the question open wide,
Human answers fail when pride becomes the guide.
Wisdom cannot be purchased, mined, or seized,
It comes from God, before whom striving ceased.
[Verse 2]
Wisdom and knowledge are granted together with unmatched wealth and honor.
Solomon returns to Jerusalem and reigns over Israel.
Chariots and horsemen are multiplied in royal cities.
Horses and chariots are imported from Egypt and exported to neighboring kings.
[Bridge]
Foreign laborers are numbered as bearers, hewers, and overseers.
Solomon asks Huram for cedar and a craftsman skilled in metals, fabrics.
He confesses that heaven cannot contain the great God for whom he builds.
Huram praises God, promises timber by sea to Joppa.
[Final Chorus]
Wisdom for the Great Work, let the question open wide,
Human answers fail when pride becomes the guide.
Wisdom cannot be purchased, mined, or seized,
It comes from God, before whom human pride must cease.
[Outro]
The question stayed when every speech was through.
Wisdom began where human certainty withdrew.
