Lyrics · 2 Chronicles
Until the Land Had Enjoyed Her Sabbaths
2 Chronicles 33:1-36:23
[Verse 1]
Manasseh begins a fifty-five-year reign and rebuilds idolatrous high places.
Children pass through fire, occult practices spread, and an idol is set in God's house.
Assyrian captains take Manasseh with hooks and brass chains to Babylon.
God hears and returns him to Jerusalem, teaching him that the LORD is God.
[Pre-Chorus]
The warning stood where no one wished to see,
And every hidden root became a tree.
[Chorus]
Until the Land Had Enjoyed Her Sabbaths, let the warning remain,
Hidden sin still flowers into pain.
The word of the LORD exposed what men concealed,
And judgment stood where every heart was revealed.
[Verse 2]
In the eighteenth year temple repairs begin under Shaphan and Hilkiah.
Hilkiah finds the book of the law, and Shaphan reads it before Josiah.
The king tears his clothes and seeks counsel from Huldah.
Josiah reads the covenant before the nation and causes the people to serve God.
[Bridge]
Pharaoh-neco warns Josiah not to interfere, but the disguised king is wounded at Megiddo.
Jeremiah and the singers lament Josiah's death.
Jehoahaz, Jehoiakim, Jehoiachin, and Zedekiah pass under Egyptian and Babylonian domination.
Priests and people pollute the temple and mock messengers until there is no remedy.
[Final Chorus]
Until the Land Had Enjoyed Her Sabbaths, let the warning remain,
Hidden sin still flowers into pain.
The word of the LORD exposed what men concealed,
And judgment stood where every heart stood revealed.
[Outro]
The warning did not vanish with the dust.
The final line remembered judgment, fear, and trust.
