Andrew

Every time he appears he is bringing somebody to meet somebody else.

Andrew is a disciple of John the Baptist first. He hears his teacher point and say behold the Lamb of God, and he follows, spends the day, and then goes to find his brother. He is always described in relation to that brother, Simon Peter’s brother, which is a quiet thing to carry when your brother is first in every list. He appears three times in John and does the same thing each time: he brings a person forward.

The story of Andrew

  1. 01

    John 1:35-42

He first found his own brother

He hears where the teacher is staying and asks to see it. After a day he goes straight for Simon with one sentence: we have found the Messiah. And he brought him.

  2. 02

    John 6:8-9

But what are they among so many

Five thousand to feed and no plan. He produces a boy with five barley loaves and two small fishes, and says out loud what everyone is thinking about the arithmetic.

  3. 03

    John 12:20-22

    Sir, we would see Jesus

Greeks come at the feast and ask Philip. Philip does not take them himself; he tells Andrew, and Andrew and Philip go together and tell Jesus.

Why it matters

The pattern is the point. He brings Peter, who becomes the leader. He brings a boy with five loaves and two small fishes and is honest that it will not go far. And when Greeks come to Philip asking to see Jesus, Philip goes and tells Andrew, and Andrew takes them in. Nothing he does is large on its own, and the results are out of proportion to it.
