Galatians

Galatians opens with “I Marvel That Ye Are So Soon Removed” and carries its history toward “Bear Ye One Another’s Burdens.” No thanksgiving and no pleasantries, which is unique among his letters. Restore the person caught in a fault in a spirit of meekness, watching yourself, and carry each other’s loads.

  1. 01

    Galatians 1–2

I Marvel That Ye Are So Soon Removed

No thanksgiving and no pleasantries, which is unique among his letters. He is astonished they have turned so quickly to another gospel, and says that if an angel from heaven preaches a different one, let him be accursed. Then his own account, the years in Arabia, the visit to Jerusalem, and the day he told Peter to his face that he was wrong for stopping eating with Gentiles once certain men arrived.

    Galatians 3–4

Received Ye the Spirit by the Works of the Law

He asks one question that settles the whole argument. Did you receive the Spirit by keeping rules, or by believing what you heard? Abraham believed before the law came, the law was a schoolmaster until Christ, and in Christ there is neither Jew nor Greek, bond nor free, male nor female. Why go back to what you were freed from, he asks, and says he is afraid he has laboured over them in vain.

    Galatians 5

    Stand Fast in the Liberty

Freedom is not the end of this letter, it is the middle of it. If you take circumcision as the way in, you are a debtor to keep the whole law. But faith works by love, and the whole law is fulfilled in one word: love thy neighbour as thyself. Then the two lists, the works of the flesh and the fruit of the Spirit, which is one fruit with nine parts, and against such there is no law.

    Galatians 6

    Bear Ye One Another’s Burdens

Restore the person caught in a fault in a spirit of meekness, watching yourself, and carry each other’s loads. Whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. Then he takes the pen from the secretary and finishes in his own large handwriting: the men pushing circumcision want to avoid persecution and to boast about your body, but God forbid that I should glory except in the cross.
