The big picture
God has told Israel, his people, to enter Canaan, the land west of Jordan, the river beside their camp. Moses, their leader, now receives its boundaries and the names of those who will divide it. Two tribes and half of another already have land to the east. Eleazar, the priest, and Joshua, the next leader, will oversee the western shares. Leaders from the tribes receiving land will help them.

The Southern and Western Boundaries Are Set
God describes Canaan as Israel's inheritance with defined edges. The southern boundary runs from the end of the salt sea through desert landmarks near Edom, a neighbouring land. It passes south of Kadesh-barnea and continues through named points toward the river of Egypt and the sea. The great sea forms the western boundary. The command gives the people a land with limits. They are not free to claim land wherever they choose. Seas, rivers and named places mark these edges. They show where the promised share begins and ends.
In everyday life
A land survey trainee walks the southern fence of a nature trust's new property, then traces its western shoreline on the deed. The gift includes definite edges, so the trust cannot claim every attractive field nearby. Marking limits is part of receiving it. Israel's boundaries are given by God, not a private donor's deed.

3Then your south quarter shall be from the wilderness of Zin along by the coast of Edom, and your south border shall be the outmost coast of the salt sea eastward:

Numbers 34:7-12
Northern and Eastern Edges Complete the Border
The northern line runs from the great sea toward mount Hor and the entrance of Hamath, then through named places to Hazar-enan. The eastern boundary descends through further landmarks to the sea of Chinnereth, then follows Jordan to the salt sea. This completes the outline around the land. The names work like markers on a boundary description rather than a travel diary. The list shows where each edge lies. Every side has a limit, so the gift does not stretch into all the lands around it.
In everyday life
The reservoir engineer traces the far side of a catchment map until its line meets the river at the lower edge. Each landmark closes another gap in the outline. The completed boundary tells her which ground belongs within the plan. God gives Canaan's borders as part of his gift of land. An engineer draws this map to manage water.

Numbers 34:12 The eastern line returns to the salt sea, completing the outline. The list surrounds the land rather than giving only a direction in which Israel should travel.

Numbers 34:13-15
Eastern Shares Are Already Assigned
Moses tells Israel that this outlined land will be divided by lot among nine tribes and half of another. Reuben, Gad and half of Manasseh, the remaining tribal groups, have already received their inheritance east of Jordan near Jericho. Those tribes already have homes. That is why fewer than twelve tribes receive land to the west. These new border rules fit the earlier deal. They do not give the eastern tribes a second share. Israel will live on both sides of the river. This outline concerns the western share alone.
In everyday life
A cooperative secretary marks nine households and part of a larger family for the remaining plots, then points to the members already settled across the lane. Their names are not missing by mistake. The new division covers those still waiting. Israel's eastern shares follow conquest and Moses' grant, not a cooperative building scheme.

Numbers 34:15 The eastern location explains the reduced number of tribes in the western shares. The boundary list does not cancel the inheritance already given on the other side.

Numbers 34:16-29
Named Leaders Will Divide the Land
God names Eleazar and Joshua to oversee the division, with one leader from each receiving tribe. Caleb represents Judah, and the other leaders are listed by name, father and tribe. These men have a defined task: to distribute the inheritance in Canaan. The names show who must do this work. Israel knows this before it enters the land. The land will not be divided by whichever family first occupies a desirable place. Each tribe has a named leader to act for it. These men serve under the priest and the man chosen to lead the people.
In everyday life
The cemetery board chair reads the names of its allocation team beside a plan of the new burial ground. Each member represents a different local district. Families know who will take part before any plot is assigned. God chooses these tribal leaders through Moses, not by a burial board.

Numbers 34:18 Each receiving tribe supplies a leader for the division. Each group has someone to act for it. The named leaders still oversee the whole task.
