Where the songs go in Deuteronomy

The 19 songs here set 5 of the 6 movements in Deuteronomy to music: “Forty Years, Retold at the Border” (Deuteronomy 1–4), “Hear, O Israel” (Deuteronomy 5–11), “Laws for a Land They Do Not Own Yet” (Deuteronomy 12–18), “Life and Death, So Choose Life” (Deuteronomy 27–30) and “A Song, a Blessing, and a Grave No One Finds” (Deuteronomy 31–34).

Forty Years, Retold at the Border (Deuteronomy 1–4). Moses stands east of the Jordan and tells the history back to a crowd that was made up of children when most of it happened.

Laws for a Land They Do Not Own Yet (Deuteronomy 12–18). Worship in one place, appoint honest judges, limit the king before there is a king, and test the prophet who says he speaks for God.

A Song, a Blessing, and a Grave No One Finds (Deuteronomy 31–34). Moses writes a song and teaches it to the nation so it will be remembered when he is gone, blesses the tribes one by one, then climbs Nebo and is shown the whole land he will not enter.

Not in song here yet: “Boundary Stones and Honest Weights”.
