[Verse 1]
Incense rose in temple silence;
Zechariah stood alone.
Gabriel appeared beside the altar:
A promised child would soon be known.
John would turn the hearts of fathers,
Go before in spirit and might.
Doubt made Zechariah speechless
Till the promise entered light.
[Verse 2]
Six months later, Nazareth,
A virgin heard the angel say
She was highly favored,
And a Son would come one day.
David's throne would mark His kingdom,
Endless rule beyond the sea.
Mary answered through her wonder:
"Be it unto me."
[Chorus - Mary]
My soul doth magnify the Lord,
My spirit rejoices in God my Saviour.
The mighty are lowered, the lowly raised;
The hungry are filled by covenant favor.
He remembers mercy promised long,
To Abraham and his seed made free.
The Holy One has done great things;
Be it unto me.
[Verse 3]
Elizabeth's child leapt within her
When Mary's greeting filled the room.
Months moved on; John came crying,
Breaking Zechariah's silent gloom.
His father sang of visitation,
Dawn from on high and mercy's way:
A prophet would prepare the path
Before the coming day.
[Final Refrain]
Be it unto me,
Though no road is plain to see.
Faith received the word of heaven:
Be it unto me.
