Romans

Romans opens with “Without Excuse” and carries its history toward “Him That Is Weak in the Faith Receive.” Paul writes to a church he has never visited and opens by saying he is not ashamed of the gospel. One man eats anything and another only herbs, and each is told not to despise or judge the other.

    Romans 1–4

    Without Excuse

Paul writes to a church he has never visited and opens by saying he is not ashamed of the gospel. Then the case. The pagan world is without excuse because creation itself testifies, and the religious world is worse off because it knows the law and breaks it. There is none righteous, no, not one. Abraham is called as the witness, because he was counted righteous before he was circumcised and before the law existed.

    Therefore Being Justified

We have peace with God. One man’s disobedience set against one man’s obedience. Shall we go on sinning so that grace may abound? God forbid. Then the most honest paragraph he ever wrote, about doing the thing he hates and failing to do the thing he wants. It resolves in chapter eight: no condemnation, the Spirit helping our weakness, and nothing anywhere in creation able to separate us.

My Kinsmen According to the Flesh

He says he could wish himself accursed if it would save his own people, and it is not a turn of phrase. Three chapters on why the promise has not failed, why the potter has the right to the clay, why Israel tripped over a stumbling stone, and why the branches broken off can be grafted back in. Do not boast, he tells the Gentiles. You are the wild olive here.

Him That Is Weak in the Faith Receive

One man eats anything and another only herbs, and each is told not to despise or judge the other. Do not put a stumbling block in a brother’s way over food. The letter ends with a long list of names, most of them people nobody has heard of since.
