The big picture
The temple is finished under Solomon, king of Israel. It is the house built for God's worship. Israel is God's people, and its leaders gather in Jerusalem, the royal city, for the next step. The ark, the sacred chest holding the covenant tablets, must be brought into the inner room. Priests, who lead the sacred rites, and Levites, their supporting tribe, carry the holy objects. The building is ready, but its dedication reaches a point no worker can manufacture.

Scripture beside the summary
2 Chronicles · King James Version · 142 Chronicles 5:1-6
The Finished House Receives the Sacred Objects
Solomon stores the silver, gold and other gifts that David, his father, had devoted to God. He gathers the tribal and family leaders to move the ark from the city of David, also called Zion. The people assemble during the seventh-month feast. Levites lift the ark, and priests and Levites bring the old worship tent and its sacred vessels. Solomon and the gathered people offer more sheep and cattle than can be counted. The finished building receives the objects and worship linked with Israel's earlier life before God.

In everyday life
The archivist moves a town's original charter into a new records building. Staff have finished the shelves, but the move is incomplete until the documents entrusted to them arrive safely. Long-held items join new rooms without losing their meaning. The opening day honours that continuity. Israel's ark carries covenant tablets within a sacred act of worship.
Notice
2 Chronicles 5:1 David's dedicated gifts are placed in the temple after the work is finished. The new house receives what the previous king set apart, joining preparation to completion.
2 Chronicles 5:1-6
King James Version1Thus all the work that Solomon made for the house of the LORD was finished: and Solomon brought in all the things that David his father had dedicated; and the silver, and the gold, and all the instruments, put he among the treasures of the house of God.
2Then Solomon assembled the elders of Israel, and all the heads of the tribes, the chief of the fathers of the children of Israel, unto Jerusalem, to bring up the ark of the covenant of the LORD out of the city of David, which is Zion.
3Wherefore all the men of Israel assembled themselves unto the king in the feast which was in the seventh month.
4And all the elders of Israel came; and the Levites took up the ark.
5And they brought up the ark, and the tabernacle of the congregation, and all the holy vessels that were in the tabernacle, these did the priests and the Levites bring up.
6Also king Solomon, and all the congregation of Israel that were assembled unto him before the ark, sacrificed sheep and oxen, which could not be told nor numbered for multitude.
2 Chronicles 5:7-10
The Ark Is Placed Under the Wings
The priests carry the ark into the most holy room beneath the cherub figures, the winged images standing there. Their wings cover the ark and its carrying poles. The poles can be seen from before the inner room but not from outside. Only the two stone tablets are inside the chest. Moses, Israel's earlier leader, placed them there at Horeb. This mountain was where God made his covenant after Israel left Egypt, its former place of slavery. The ark therefore carries the record of a bond with God, not a collection of treasures chosen by Solomon.

In everyday life
The registrar opens a plain legal file inside an ornate council chamber. It contains the signed agreement that gives the gathering its authority. The room's fine surfaces do not replace the document or add to its terms. Its importance lies in the bond it records. The ark holds tablets from God's covenant with Israel at Horeb.
Notice
2 Chronicles 5:10 The chest holds the two covenant tablets and nothing else. The inner room's central object points back to God's bond with the people rather than Solomon's wealth.
2 Chronicles 5:7-10
King James Version7And the priests brought in the ark of the covenant of the LORD unto his place, to the oracle of the house, into the most holy place, even under the wings of the cherubims:
8For the cherubims spread forth their wings over the place of the ark, and the cherubims covered the ark and the staves thereof above.
9And they drew out the staves of the ark, that the ends of the staves were seen from the ark before the oracle; but they were not seen without. And there it is unto this day.
10There was nothing in the ark save the two tables which Moses put therein at Horeb, when the LORD made a covenant with the children of Israel, when they came out of Egypt.
2 Chronicles 5:11-14
United Praise Meets God's Filling Glory
All the priests present have prepared themselves for sacred service, without waiting for their usual turns. The singers stand in white linen with cymbals and stringed instruments, beside a hundred twenty trumpeting priests. They make one sound of praise and thanks, declaring God's goodness and lasting mercy. Then a cloud fills the house. The priests cannot remain to carry out their work because God's glory fills it. The carefully prepared human service meets a presence it does not control. The house's meaning is not exhausted by its rooms, objects or music.

In everyday life
The mountain guide stops speaking when cloud and thunder sweep across a lookout. The group falls silent, and the planned explanation gives way to attention before something no one arranged. Preparation has brought them there, but it cannot control the moment. The temple cloud is God's glory, not an overwhelming change in weather.
Notice
2 Chronicles 5:14 The priests cannot continue their service because the house is filled. Their stopped work marks God's presence rather than a failure to finish the building or prepare the rites.
2 Chronicles 5:11-14
King James Version11And it came to pass, when the priests were come out of the holy place: (for all the priests that were present were sanctified, and did not then wait by course:
12Also the Levites which were the singers, all of them of Asaph, of Heman, of Jeduthun, with their sons and their brethren, being arrayed in white linen, having cymbals and psalteries and harps, stood at the east end of the altar, and with them an hundred and twenty priests sounding with trumpets:)
13It came even to pass, as the trumpeters and singers were as one, to make one sound to be heard in praising and thanking the LORD; and when they lifted up their voice with the trumpets and cymbals and instruments of musick, and praised the LORD, saying, For he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever: that then the house was filled with a cloud, even the house of the LORD;
14So that the priests could not stand to minister by reason of the cloud: for the glory of the LORD had filled the house of God.
