1 Chronicles

1 Chronicles opens with “Nine Chapters of Names” and carries its history toward “Everything in Order, and a Public Handover.” The history restarts at Adam and comes forward through lists that read like a directory and work like a deed. David gives Solomon the pattern for the house, which he says was given to him in writing, and hands over the materials he has been stockpiling.

    1 Chronicles 1–9

    Nine Chapters of Names

The history restarts at Adam and comes forward through lists that read like a directory and work like a deed. This is who we are, these are the families, this is the tribe the priests come from, and these are the ones who came back. A people who lost their country prove on paper that they still exist.

    Mighty Men and a Crown

Saul dies on Gilboa and the tribes come to Hebron by the thousand to make David king. The record stops to name the men who broke through a garrison to fetch him water from a well he had only mentioned wanting, and what he did with it when they brought it.

The Ark Comes to the City

The first attempt goes wrong on a new cart and a man dies steadying it, so the ark waits three months in another house. The second time the Levites carry it on their shoulders as instructed, and David dances the whole way in a linen ephod.

A House He Will Not Build

David is told the temple will be built by his son and not by him. His answer is to spend the rest of his life buying the ground and stockpiling the iron, bronze and cedar for a building he will never see. A census he was warned against brings a plague and an angel with a drawn sword over the city, and on that threshingfloor he says: this is the house of the LORD God.

Courses of Priests, Singers and Gatekeepers

The administration is written down in detail: twenty four courses of priests, singers appointed to prophesy with harps and cymbals, gatekeepers assigned by lot to each side of the house, treasurers, judges and officers. Nothing about the worship is left to improvisation.

Everything in Order, and a Public Handover

David gives Solomon the pattern for the house, which he says was given to him in writing, and hands over the materials he has been stockpiling. Then he asks the assembly who is willing, and the giving that follows is counted out in front of everyone.
