In the south Athaliah murders the royal family to take the throne and misses one baby, hidden in the temple by his aunt for six years and crowned at seven while she is still on the throne.

King after king in the north does evil while the empire closes in, until Samaria falls and ten tribes are marched off and replaced by settlers. Then Judah hears Assyrian officers shouting insults at the wall in the local language so everyone can understand. Hezekiah carries the letter into the temple and spreads it open before God, and the army that could not be stopped goes home.

Manasseh fills the city with blood for fifty five years. Then a boy king repairs the temple, a forgotten book is found in it, and Josiah tears his clothes at what it says and burns the high places from one end of the country to the other.

The reforms do not outlive the reformer. Jerusalem is besieged, the temple is stripped of its metal, the walls come down, and the people are carried off in stages. The last paragraph is a small kindness: a captive king given a daily allowance for the rest of his life.
