No genealogy and no nativity. A wilderness preacher, a baptism, forty days handled in a sentence, and Jesus is already calling fishermen off their boats. The favourite word in this Gospel is immediately. A demon names him in a synagogue, a healed leper disobeys the order to keep quiet, a paralytic arrives through the roof, and by the third chapter the authorities are already working out how to destroy him.

Mark 4–8
He teaches in parables, stops a storm with two words, and sends a legion into a herd of pigs. A woman touches his coat in a crowd and he stops everything to find her. Five thousand are fed from bread that keeps coming out of a basket, he walks on water, he feeds four thousand more, and the disciples in the boat afterwards are anxious because they forgot to bring bread.

Mark 9–10
After Peter’s confession everything turns toward Jerusalem, and three times he says plainly what will happen there. Three times they miss it entirely. On the mountain his clothes go whiter than any launderer on earth could whiten them. A father says Lord, I believe, help thou mine unbelief. James and John ask for the best seats, and the answer is that the Son of man came to give his life a ransom for many.

Mark 11–15
He rides in, curses a fig tree, clears the temple, and is questioned by every faction in turn. A widow puts in two mites and is noticed. A woman breaks a jar of ointment over his head and is defended against the room. Then the upper room, Gethsemane and the request that the cup pass, the trial, Peter warming his hands at a fire, and a Roman centurion at the cross who says the thing nobody else in the book has managed to say.

Mark 16
Women come at sunrise worrying about who will move the stone, and find it already moved. A young man in a white robe tells them he is risen, he is not here, and to go and tell the disciples and Peter, a name added on purpose. The oldest copies stop with the women running away frightened and saying nothing to anybody, which is either an accident of history or the most demanding ending in the Gospels.
